Gadget
A gadget is a fancy piece of technology that has a specific purpose. Generally, these are designed to make our lives easier and a little more fun. Sometimes, they also stand in for a real-life accessory or tool. But are they truly worthy of the name? Hopefully, the Internet will give us a glimpse into the world beyond the front doors of our homes and offices.
Depending on who you talk to, a gadget is a complicated device or an unnecessary one. The most common use of this term is to describe a new, expensive hardware item. For example, you might use the e-reader or a float in water powered gadget. Other specialized devices may be more of a novelty. However, most gadgets are less than laudable in the long run.
A gadget is a device or computer program that does something wacky. A gadget in this sense can be a simple widget, a gizmo, or some sort of whiz-bang feature. Historically, the first electronic device to qualify as a gadget was the cell phone. It was a technological marvel that was not only able to do something, but did so in an enviable manner.
What is a Gadget?
As far as the Genie and its counterpart, there is a reason for the name. A gadget can be a lot more expensive than its ilk, so it is only fitting that it deserves the best of breed designation. It’s also worth mentioning that it is often used to help solve NP-completeness proofs. The best part is that it can be implemented in a broader environment that can manage multiple gadgets.
As you can probably imagine, the most popular gadget is the smartphone. And while that is true, smartphones are by no means the only technology that qualifies as a gadget. Other esoteric items include wearable electronics, robots, and robotic cats. If a device can do a task that is not done by other more standardized machines, it is a winner. But as the saying goes, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. A gadget is also an excellent way to show off your own flair.
In a nutshell, a gadget is a fancy piece of technology that a) does something b) is relatively cheap to produce and c) is easy to use. For instance, you can mount a GoPro camera onto a gadget. The newest version of the mobile gadget can also be found in the form of a USB stick. The next time you’re at the store, try to spot the many versions of the same item. Eventually, you’ll be able to pick the one that’s right for you. Whether you choose a cellular phone, a Bluetooth earbud, or a laptop, you’ll have the convenience of being able to connect to your favorite devices, and you’ll have the added benefit of being able to control them from afar. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to share that same device with your favorite geek, but that’s another story.
