Often as I see other artists’ experiences with their creativity defined in pencil to paper within their “Artist Statements,” I find myself thinking, “This reminds me of the man who tries to define God by putting creativity in a box.” . I also often wonder, “What the hell are they talking about? I wonder if even ‘they’ know.”
I have met all kinds of artists. I always hope to be able to share some kind of phenomenon with fellow artists, of an unmistakable vibration that we both generate and feed off of. I hope that our connection will make us reach new heights and feel compelled to go home and create great things. I rarely meet such artists, they are as different from each other as anyone.
I really believe there is an ‘energy’ within art, colors, and it’s that energy about a work of art that people resonate with… or not. Some just like my precise artwork, which I feel are representations of and not, in my personal opinion, ‘true art’. He tells me that we are not connected in a ‘spiritual’ sense. However, we connect on other levels, so the consequences of that kind of thinking are not something to ponder, in case you find my opinion offensive or objectionable.
I think a lot of the ‘art talk’ is gibberish, and it’s about as redundant and boring as the latest football player explaining how his team is going to win the next game. However, I also believe that it is necessary for the artist to describe the connection that he feels with his art. Doing that helps the viewer to enter his world, as well as the artist to understand ‘what the hell happened’ for them to create what they did.
Creativity is elusive, but the more we walk through that door, the more we find ourselves in the presence of something truly remarkable. I believe that the vibration of colors, together with the spirit of the dance of creative action, can be found in all kinds of art and nobody has a market for it. From time to time we meet geniuses like Leonardo da Vinci and we are amazed. Due to the miraculous adventures of the soul, in any genre, it is our responsibility to pursue the unknown. Leonardo da Vinci only scratched the surface. Chasing the vibes of the elusive is often a lonely experience. It is within that ‘sentence’ of spells that mystics are uncovered. However, there are many ways to do it, as there are religions, so I don’t think anyone has the key to everything.
So how do you do it? How do you write an “Artist Statement” that makes sense? First define who you are within your work in your own mind. If you don’t know, you won’t be able to write anything that others will understand. Beware of the gibberish, but write your heart out while looking at his work. It is possible that you discover a part of yourself that you had not known before. Take your time, find out who you are. Also remember da Vinci, nothing he did was done without extreme confrontation of what he sought to explore, so laziness is not acceptable. Right? Yes!
