Pattaya has a reputation as a city focused on fun and entertainment. Everyone here is intent on making this a memorable visit for you. Well, almost all. I’m not going to dwell on scams in this article, I cover it elsewhere. Pattaya is a safe city, but many visitors to this amazing city get into trouble by accident, because they don’t understand Thai culture, or because they don’t follow some basic rules of good behavior.
crossing the road
Remember that in Thailand, traffic drives on the left, so be careful when crossing the road, especially if you drive on the right on the way home. The driving style in Thailand is very different from most other parts of the world, but it is quite predictable, once you understand it. I would describe you as opportunistic, but tolerant of other road users. Drivers generally will not stop for pedestrians, even at designated crosswalks. If you are crossing the street and see oncoming traffic, do not stop, make sure the driver has seen you and keep walking at the same pace. Traffic will maneuver around you. You are more likely to get hit if you stop in the middle of the road! By the way, this advice does not apply if the driver is a foreigner. Your driving behavior of him is unpredictable!
Cash, credit cards, ATM cards.
Carry a minimum of cash when you go out. Decide how much you need for the day or night, and carry this amount of cash in a small wallet with no other debit or credit cards. If you want to carry a credit card or ATM card, carry only one card and keep it in a separate wallet. Leave your other credit cards in your hotel room in a locked safe. Most of the companies in Pattaya expect to be paid in cash.
Resolving disputes.
If you are being overcharged for anything, be it a taxi fare or a bar tab, try to resolve the matter in a reasoned and diplomatic manner. If that doesn’t work, just pay the bill and leave. If you don’t have proof that you were overcharged, you’re not going to win an argument.
If you have proof, go see the Tourist Police. (call 1155 or visit their booth at the north end of Walking Street after 7pm). They will help you deal with the situation. Don’t try to take matters into your own hands. Avoid confrontation at all costs. Your chances of success are extremely small.
Pattaya girls.
Most Thai girls are honest (yes, even the ones that work in bars), but in tough economic times, your girlfriend may be in for a treat. Be sure to register her friend at the hotel reception. If she is staying in an apartment or guest house with limited security, make sure all valuables and documents are locked in the safe in her room.
There are many stories about bar girl scams, but in my experience they are extremely rare. Use a little good judgment and you will find that most of the ladies you meet are honest citizens who are totally trustworthy.
tolerant thai
Thai people have strong value systems and a commitment to their own culture. Thai people are generally non-judgmental and do not impose their beliefs on other people. Thai people are also very tolerant of other people’s behavior. Don’t confuse this with weakness or submission. Don’t use this as an excuse for unreasonable or inconsiderate behavior. Remember that everyone has their breaking point. Be as charming, respectful and tolerant of others as your Thai hosts and you will be well regarded and can look forward to a safe and fun-filled vacation. Remember to smile a lot, especially in conversation. This helps to avoid misunderstandings and you will be seen as a kind and considerate person.
