To be honest, I’ve never had much success making my own play dough. In the few tries I did, the batter fell apart and dried too quickly so I gave up and went to buy some.
I am a huge fan of the Crayola brand of play dough, however I once bought another brand and am still trying to get that play dough out of my house. It was so sticky that it ended up, in its many bright colors, ALL of my house!
Then one day I went to my son’s nursery and the children were playing with play dough. It felt and smelled great, so I asked the teacher what brand it was so I could buy some. He amazed me when he told me that he had succeeded. So I decided it was time to try again!
The best advice I can give on how to make playdough is to cook your playdough. This ties it together and makes it just as good, if not better, than the commercial putty you can buy.
So I got down to business and made some playdough from the following recipe and it was fantastic. So no more store bought play dough for us!

I think homemade playdough makes a beautiful birthday or Christmas gift, especially if you print out the playdough recipe and attach it to the playdough tub to teach others how to make playdough.
Play dough recipe
1 cup of salt
2 cups flour
4 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons cooking oil
2 cups of water
Food coloring
pan
1. Mix all the ingredients in the saucepan.
2. Cook over medium heat for three to five minutes, stirring constantly until mixture sets.
Store in an airtight container (or plastic bag) in the refrigerator. If stored this way, the playdough will last for weeks, even a few months!
