If you are planning a trip to Djursland, Denmark, then there is plenty to choose from for entertainment. Of course, the time of year that you plan to visit Djursland will play a part in what you can see and do. First, let me tell you a little about Djursland, where it is, how to get there and WHY and then I will tell you about my 5 favorite things to do in Djursland.
Djursland is a great place to vacation and relax without having to worry about things to do. Djursland is located on the Jutland peninsula of Denmark, northeast of Aarhus. Djursland is the area that runs east of the Randers / Aarhus border and is the nose-like piece of land that extends into the ocean.
You can fly to Aarhus Airport, which is in the heart of Djursland, between Roende and Tirstrup or you can take the ferry to Ebeltoft from Zealand. Most people drive, as the public transportation system is probably not enough to get around the entire area in a timely manner.
Since Djursland is more of a summer destination, I will focus on the best things to do in the spring and summer months.
First, try one of the biggest attractions in Djursland, which is the large number of Beaches surrounding Djursland on all three sides. The best known and most familiar is Grenaa Strand, which is about 7 km long with excellent sandy beaches and good facilities for family fun. Other beaches are Boeslum and Draaby, located further south near Ebeltoft on the east coast and Ebeltoft Inland Cove has several beaches, including Vibaek and Femmuller. Further north you can visit Boennerup Strand or Lystrup Strand. There are 13 blue flag beaches among the more than 30 beaches in Djursland.
Djursland is also home to one of Denmark’s most popular tourist attractions, which is Djursland Sommerland, an amusement park located north of Nimtofte, which is home to more than 60 attractions and entertainment for children and adults. The season is from May to early September. The water park portion of the park generally opens in late May or early June.
If you like wildlife and exotic animals, this is your way! Djursland is home to 3 popular animal parks. The Scandinavian Wildlife Park (Skandinavisk Dyrepark) is located near Kolind and offers you the opportunity to see almost 300 animals, from polar bears to moose and many other species of Scandinavian animals. You can get up and get close to many of them and even be part of their diet. Another option is Ree Park at Ebeltoft, where you can see 90 species of animals, including giraffes, bears, camels, and much more. Both parks are experiences and great family fun. Many activities. The season is from April to October. Don’t forget the Munkholm Zoo on the outskirts of Balle, where you can enter the grounds of many of the animals and see it up close!
Djursland is also steeped in history and has many castles, museums, and mansions. You can spend several days traversing Djursland and visiting the various locations. Some of the sites are Gammel Estrup near Auning which is home to several museums, Rosenholm Castle which is one of the most beautiful castles in Denmark, located just north of Hornslet. You can get a list of all the manor houses and castles in Djursland from the tourist office in Ebeltoft or Grenaa.
Finally, you have to relax with a little shopping. Djursland isn’t a modern shopping mecca, but Djursland’s towns are a must-see for other reasons. The towns are like a walk back in time with cobbled streets, thatched roof houses and many antique shops. On a warm day, there is nothing like walking the cobbled streets and immersing yourself in quaint shops full of history and atmosphere. Ebeltoft and Roende are some of my favorites, but everyone will soon discover their own favorites.
