This week I hosted a free information session for virtual assistants.
One of the first things I ask someone when they are thinking about starting: why do they want to start their own business.
I have heard a variety of answers to this question, but many times the answer is ‘be my own boss’.
When I start working with someone as their coach, I ask them to dig into that statement. Why Do you want to be your own boss?
There are always more underlying reasons than simply because you want.
And we often talk about what it takes to understand WHY you want to be in business for yourself. Because some days are tough and some decisions are tough.
Some days you will find yourself wondering if it’s worth it.
So why not start your entire business by considering that WHY and building on it?
Why do you want to be your own boss? Think about the real reasons.
Because it’s GREAT to be your own boss, for so many reasons!
These are some of the ones I have heard through conversations with other virtual assistants:
1. I can make my own decisions (good or bad!)
2. I can manage my own hours.
3. I can manage my own workload.
4. I can choose the people I want to work with.
5. I can decide what services I want to offer.
6. I can make time to fit in with the other things I want to do in my life: excursions, trips, vacations, etc. of the kids.
These are the normal responses I hear.
Here are some extras you may not have thought of.
7. I can decide what I charge and how much money I earn.
8. I can claim some of my expenses on my taxes.
9. I don’t have to answer to anyone.
10. I can hire my own staff!
11. I can take a vacation whenever I want!
12. I can earn as much money as I want, at any time.
Being your own boss is a big responsibility, but when you look at the benefits, you will surely find it easier to handle those tough days.
When you approach your business with a CEO mindset (you are not an employee, you are the owner and CEO of your own business), you will work better with your customers.
You will establish limits and procedures to make things clear to everyone who works with you. Everything becomes … easier.
Being the boss is great, as long as you act like one!
