There are two unique positive traits that show the values of Filipinos in life. These values towards truth, family, and respect for others are the foundation of the core strengths of Filipino character. As a Filipino, I can say that the Philippine nation is known for its honesty or “katapatan” and its strong sense of family and community ties due to the orientation of its people.
Known as the value of “katapatan” in the Filipino language, honesty is a great positive attitude of Filipinos. This virtue of righteousness and truthfulness in both mind and heart makes Filipino workers world class. This virtue particularly strengthens the nation with trustworthy citizens.
However, this does not mean that all Filipinos are honest. This article only explains that honesty is highly visible in the Philippine society and is even reflected in every detail of life. In fact, honesty is always emphasized and highly appreciated in movies and daily TV shows in the Philippines. Therefore, the Filipino audience is always drawn to stories of righteousness, a strong expression of their hope for better days in their choice to side with good.
Honesty results from the second positive trait which is a strong sense of family and community. This indigenous trait of the Filipino people is called “pakikipagkapwa-tao” in the native language. The strong family orientation extends further into the community, fostering cooperation between the neighborhood and the workplace.
To exemplify this strong sense of community, Filipinos like to interact with their peers, especially in times of crisis. You can see this in moments of death where family, relatives, colleagues and friends provide financial, moral and emotional support in this time of depression. This concept of neighborliness is further shown by spending more time together with mutual visits and even exchanging food.
These two values are unique positive traits of the Filipino people. In fact, Filipinos pride themselves on these values founded on truthful living with close family members and a highly cooperative community.
