The Macallan Estate distillery is located in Craigellachie, Moray, Scotland. The company was originally founded in 1824 and became one of the “Big 3” Single Malts of Scotland. In 1999, Edrington Group purchased the Macallan brand from Highland Distillers. However, in 2012, the distillery changed its labeling laws and no longer calls it “Speyside.”
The Macallan Estate’s distinctive nose brings notes of cinnamon, wood spice, orange oil, and dried fruits. This single malt is 86 proof and matured in sherry-seasoned oak casks. The distillery is not required to state its age when marketing the Macallan Estate, as they wanted to have the flexibility to choose the best casks for it. The result is a rich and complex spirit that has a distinctive flavor profile.
The Macallan Estate Single Malt Scotch Whisky
As an estate-grown single malt, The Macallan Estate is a rare treat. Produced from barley grown on their estate in Speyside, the Macallan distillery overlooks this 485-acre estate. Distillation takes place once a year, over a week. It’s usually reserved for their best whiskies. The packaging is elegant, with aerial photography of the estate.
As a single malt Scotch Whisky, The Macallan distillers remove the head and tails from the whisky. This allows them to gather 16% of the whisky’s spirit, one of the highest cuts of any Scottish distillery. This result is a full-bodied whisky with a sweet finish. There are two types of whisky – single malt and blended.
As an estate-grown single malt Scotch whiskey, Highland Park is one of the most complex and well-balanced of all the whiskies. It is a rich, complex spirit made from home-grown barley. Highland Park whisky is considered a rare drink because of its characteristic flavor. It is best enjoyed neat or with water. But don’t forget that you can add water or other ingredients to make it more complex. Whiskey is the base for many cocktails.
