Reiki – Alternative Healing
Reiki (pronounced lightning – key) is the spiritual energy healing practice developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui that uses a technique commonly called palm healing as a form of alternative medicine. It was found in ancient writings in Tibet, the keys to heal with touch and channel energy to you from the external environment energy source. By using this technique, practitioners transfer healing energy in the form of ki through the palms of their hands to the recipient.
In its simplest translation, Reiki is universal life energy. It is the life force that exists in all things. Reiki practice is the art and science of channeling this universal life energy in a particular pattern to heal and harmonize the physical and mental body. Stress, worry and emotional discomfort remain in the mental and emotional bodies, blocking their source of energy and causing pain and illness to manifest in the physical body. Reiki or “energy work” can remove these blockages and allow the life energy force to flow freely, enhancing your own body’s natural healing powers. A client’s understanding of these direct relationships between the mental, emotional, and physical bodies can greatly enhance one’s own healing process.
Reiki energy will flow through the practitioner’s hands whenever the hands are placed or held near a potential recipient. The energy is drawn to the receptor or a specific receptor injury to activate or enhance natural healing processes. The belief is that the energy is “intelligent,” meaning that Reiki knows where to heal, even if the practitioner’s hands are not present on the specific area. This is complete, full body healing at its finest!
In a typical Reiki full body treatment, the Reiki practitioner instructs the recipient to lie down, usually on a massage table, and relax. Loose, comfortable clothing is usually worn during treatment. The doctor may ask a few questions about certain areas of concern, then take a few moments to enter a calm or meditative state of mind and mentally prepare for treatment. So the treatment is usually carried out without unnecessary talking.
The treatment continues with the practitioner placing their hands on the receiver in various positions. Some pros may use a no-touch technique, in which the hands are kept within a few inches of the receiver’s body in some or all positions. The hands are generally held in one position for three to five minutes, or as long as the physician deems necessary for spot treatment, before moving to the next position. Hand positions provide full coverage of the head, front of torso, knees, and feet. Between 12 and 20 positions are used, and the entire treatment lasts between 45 and 90 minutes.
The recipient often feels warmth or tingling in the area being treated, even when a non-contact approach is used. A state of deep relaxation, combined with a general sense of well-being, is often the most noticeable immediate effect of the treatment. There are times when emotional discharges can also occur during the session. Reiki treatment stimulates the body’s natural healing processes, you will not usually see instant “cures” for specific health problems such as pain or headaches. A series of three or more treatments, usually one to seven days apart, is usually recommended if it is a chronic condition, and regular treatments can be used on an ongoing basis to maintain wellness.
