Often when Americans think of a warm-weather vacation, they think of Mexico, Hawaii, or the Caribbean. In my experience, they often don’t consider Key West, Florida when determining their tropical destination spot. In fact, more Europeans visit the Florida Keys each year than Americans. I wonder why is this, when the little chain of islands has so much to offer. Did we forget the tiny island at the end of the Florida Keys that is the southernmost tip of our country…and which, by the way, is also the only place in America that has never seen frost on the ground?
Key West is a tropical paradise. From the crystal clear azure waters to the incredible sunsets (held every night in what is aptly named the "sunset celebration"), to amazing beachside hotels and restaurants, this place will soothe your soul and put you in "beach fashion" almost immediately. Once you’re settled in, have a fruity drink in hand, and have enjoyed the feel of warm sand between your toes, what kind of adventures or excursions would you like to have while on the island?
Known for its sunsets and the elusive "green flash" that accompanies them just as the sun is fully setting, one can experience this from the water on a sunset cruise. The Wind and Wine Sunset Sail is a 2 1/2 hour cruise offering a selection of red and white wines, as well as champagne, for your cruising pleasure. For a more festive atmosphere, check out the Commotion on the Ocean cruise. This cruise features live country artists, margaritas, beer, and appetizers.
During the day, there is nothing better than sailing the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean on a jet ski or jet ski. They can be rented by the hour, and the feeling of the wind and salt water on your face will leave you with a big smile like no other. Snorkeling in tropical waters is also well known, with one of the best reefs in the world off the coast of the island.
This small island is also known for its incredible cuisine. Most of the restaurants have ocean views or outdoor seating. You can’t leave Key West without trying crab cakes or the dessert they’re known for… key lime pie. And of course, it would be a sin not to experience a margarita in the Keys. Jimmy Buffet is a wise man… nothing better than getting wasted again in Margaritaville.
