Vienna, Innsbruck – It is not an open letter, but an “open protest” that around 2000 local cultural workers and institutions addressed to the Federal Government and the Conference of Governors yesterday. “We are stunned by the ignorance with which the government and the provincial governors’ conference disregard the existential basic needs of art and culture,” says the letter, which is also presented by the Tyrolean cultural initiatives, the Heart of Noise Festival and the theater and the Innstrumenti Chamber Orchestra.

It is not enough “to speak of the importance of art and culture and to take care of everything else, just not about them”. Therefore one expects “the immediate correction of the current opening plan and the integration of art and culture in the already decided opening steps”, is called for in the text signed by Gerhard Ruiss (IG authors authors) and Yvonne Gimpel (IG Kultur Austria). Culture needs equal treatment with other sectors, no “vague announcements”. “We do not need any appreciation for our perseverance so far or in the future, we need concrete measures that express this appreciation.”
Therefore, a cultural summit with the participation of the state governors and the top government is indispensable in order to plan the next steps. “We do not want to wait for an April date with new decisions in order to be able to unlock in May with the appropriate lead times, nor for a later date to land in the summer break including the lead time. Culture needs lead times and thus a concrete planning horizon. ”The supporters of the open protest include composer Friedrich Cerha, author Judith W. Taschler, book award winner Daniel Wisser and theater director Andrea Breth. (jole, APA)
