Leipzig – A car driver drove into a group of pedestrians at a traffic light near a tram stop in Leipzig and killed three people. A woman died a few hours after the accident, said the police in the German city. An 85-year-old and an 80-year-old man died at the scene of the accident. The driver had no drugs or alcohol in his blood. Another woman was seriously injured.
Why the 50-year-old went into the group was initially unclear. “There are already statements from eyewitnesses and the driver. Since these differ considerably, the investigations have to be awaited,” said police spokesman Olaf Hoppe.
Slightly injured driver, negligent homicide investigation
The driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and was under police custody. “Against him is determined because of a traffic accident in connection with negligent homicide,” said Hoppe.
The emergency call was received shortly after 10 a.m. on Tuesday. According to the police, the driver had driven into the intersection area and had several people crossing a pedestrian crossing. Then the car went off the lane, crashed into a traffic light and finally landed in the track bed of the tram. Eyewitnesses reported that the 50-year-old was traveling quickly. (APA / dpa)
