NEVER TAKE THE PURPOSE OF YOUR CV FORGIVEN
It’s YOUR number one branding tool for getting attention. A resume is your written ‘advertisement’ that highlights relevant skills, educational enrichment, and specialized work experiences that you have gained throughout your professional career.
However, customizing your resume to refer to the job you want is different than simply submitting a resume that describes ALL of the jobs you’ve had.
Let me share some important tips that most recruiters won’t tell you!
So let’s say for example that you are interested in posting a job for a Lotus Notes developer and one of the job requirements reads: “Minimum of 5 years of work experience installing, configuring and administering the Lotus Notes Domino system “.
Make sure to do the following:
1. Print the job description. Highlight ALL required knowledge, skills, duties and / or abilities. Be sure to pay particular attention to “repeated” keywords and circle them.
2. Review your current resume and see where that “item of job requirement listed” fits best. Use this same “everywhere” verbiage throughout your resume where appropriate. Then use subsequent bullets to elaborate on more specific details about “how”, “when” and “to what extent” you used “Lotus Notes Domino in the installation, configuration and administration of the system”. Take advantage of using other keywords or buzzwords that are mentioned in the job description (which you highlighted in step 1).
3. Also, be sure to place them as your main bullets. (Never have a recruiter look for the required skills.) You want this requirement to be the first thing a recruiter sees. So you ask yourself, “what should I do about the other bulleted items that already exist on your resume?” Let what you have on your “current” resume act as “supporting or additional information.”
4. Make sure your resume specifically reflects at least the “5 years of work experience” for this requirement (given in this example). Recruiters will add up the total number of years required.
5. Follow steps 2 through 4 throughout your resume for EACH of the required skills listed in the job description.
Recruiters receive hundreds, sometimes thousands of resumes just for a single job posting. It is imperative to do “those little things” that separate you from your competitors.
I hope you found these tips helpful in customizing your IT resume – for the job you want!
