Walton-on-Thames is a city in the southeastern part of England. The city has a rich history and boasts several connections to pop culture in England. The population of the city is around 23,000 inhabitants, most of them distributed among the different areas of the city and its surroundings.
Walton’s name has an Anglo-Saxon origin, believed by many to mean “homestead of the Britons.” There have been suspicions that Walton is the place where Julius Caesar forded the Thames on his second invasion of Britain. However, there has been no proof of this to confirm it or not.
Walton Bridge has had five incarnations on the site since the first was built in the 15th century. There are plans to build a sixth, however construction was delayed after the public objected to some of the original plans. Construction is now scheduled to begin sometime in 2010.
Sports play an important role in Walton’s life. Being close to the water, there are opportunities for paddle boarding, kayaking, and canoeing. Plus there’s Walton and Hersham FC who play their games at Stompond Lane. The FC is nicknamed the Swans. Also, there is the Walton Casuals FC, which is nicknamed after the deer.
Many pop culture connections are present in the city. An example of this is that many Monty Python sketches were filmed in and around the city. If you ever get a chance to watch the relaunched video of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, look closely and you’ll be able to see many of the city’s sights. Another pop culture connection is that Tommy Bolin’s Dreamer was written for a person in Walton, although we still don’t know who he was. If you are in the area and looking for something to do.
