Then you decide that meditation can do wonders for you. You are going in the right direction.
Why do many meditate?
Meditation is the best medication for all agitations. – Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji
It is, in a way, a tool. It helps relieve stress, helps with chronic pain, promotes good physical health, can make you sleep better, be calmer, be present, feel happier.
On a deep level, it is a door to the unknown. Meditation helps us get an idea of who we really are.
Once you try to meditate, you will notice how disruptive the mind is. You would be surprised! You may find that your mind is thinking about your plans for the future, and then wander through the items in the store that you need to buy. You may find yourself thinking of a painful memory.
If you’re just starting out, don’t worry too much about not being able to focus. It’s natural. In time, you will learn to master your thoughts and find some peace and clarity.
Here are some valuable tips for those seeking to find their inner self through meditation.
1. Posture. Whether you’re sitting cross-legged on the floor or in a chair, make sure your head is upright and your spine is upright. Your mind will tend to wander if you are down. Remember, your body and mind are interconnected. A balanced body equates to a balanced mind. A good tip to help you straighten is to imagine that your head is touching the sky.
2 eyes. Try meditating with your eyes slightly open. This will help you be more present. Lower your eyelids and let your gaze be soft. Measure your comfort level, as some people tend to concentrate more with their eyes closed. Do what you think is best for you.
3. Breathing. Pay close attention to your breathing as it helps you anchor yourself in the present. Listen to your breathing as you go in and out. Let it flow naturally. An ancient meditation practice would be to count your breath: count silently, one, two, three, four, and then go home to one.
4. Silence. I know there is a lot of music designed to aid meditation, but nothing beats the simplicity and healing powers of silence. Sitting quietly allows you to fully experience your mind. There is a special calm and firmness that only silence can give. As you meditate more, you will find a place where your interior and exterior meet, allowing you to rest in the moment of self-awareness.
Enjoy meditation. Be kind to yourself. Start by taking time to meditate every day. Consistency is the key.
