The first arrests fell in the early evening.
Lhe first assessment of the violence that broke out on Saturday afternoon in the city center of Liège reports nine people hospitalized, including five police officers, the Liège police said on Saturday evening.
In total, 250 police officers from the Liège police and the federal police were present on site with the support of three sprinklers. Nine people, including five police officers, were injured and taken to hospital. The Liège police zone specifies, however, that other police officers, more slightly injured, remained on the ground alongside their colleagues.
According to the mayor of Liège, Willy Demeyer (PS), interviewed by RTBF “several hundred young people suddenly appeared and that is where the riot started. I have the feeling that the unfortunate facts of Monday are more of a pretext for the looting. The first arrests begin to fall and we see that some of the thugs do not come from Liège, but from the region of the Capital or even from France. ”
