About 20 demonstrators were arrested.
DRiots broke out on Sunday on the outskirts of Malieveld in The Hague, where Dutch police were trying to break up a demonstration. Several thousand participants were there to protest against government policy. The police, who were targeted by fireworks, arrested several people. Mounted police also charged the rioters.
Several thousand people
Hundreds of people had gathered in the city center park to voice their opposition to Prime Minister Mark Rutte, some of the criticism aimed at the restrictions imposed to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.
Police officers in riot gear, equipped with shields, batons and dogs, responded to the refusal of some to disperse at the end of the demonstration. The mounted police then charged and the police finally used water cannons.
Two hundred people had been allowed to take part in the protest, but it eventually attracted several thousand. Faced with the scale of the event, the burgomaster had withdrawn his authorization.
